naive about the people in this world

i've been told many times that you should trust no one but yourself. i chose to look the other way and gave people the benefit of the doubt, whether it be friends or strangers. in most cases, it is a positive thing but on occasion you run across a situation where it's not. some people may think i grew up sheltered and unaware of my surroundings...naive in the notion that somewhere, somehow you will get burned by someone. i learned that lesson recently and am not really sure how to handle it or how to feel. i can take blame in the portion that was my fault but why do people do the things they do?

my mom, a very sensitive and very wise woman tells me that no matter what to always look for the good in people. if they choose to go the wrong route and hurt you in some way, that they get what they deserve later. her words to me this morning...."whatever they have taken from you, you will get back one day" i translate it even further to mean...."not necessarily in the form that it was taken but justice for the principle that was violated..." ....i believe her....

Dearest Elle, I'm sorry to hear someone hurt you. It is always painful and I know personally I try to figure out the "why". What I've learned, is that the "why" isn't always what's important. My father has given me some good advice that I still remember from when I was a child, I'm sure you've heard it. "If someone burns you once, shame on them...if they burn you twice, shame on you." Every situation is different and I do believe that sometimes people deserve a second chance.:) It's important to try to learn the lesson from every unpleasant situation so we don't have to repeat it again. I also like to remind myself of this when I feel someone has hurt me, "Better they hurt me, than I hurt them." God does not give us more than we can handle...knowing this, I would rather be the one hurt than the one who hurt another.

This verse always helps me when I can't "figure things out":

Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

I love you Elle!:)
